Créée quelques semaines avant son éternelle rivale, IMPACT Wrestling, la Ring of Honor était initialement considérée comme la troisième compagnie la plus influente des Etats-Unis. Néanmoins, à partir de la mi-2017, la ROH est plus ou moins devenue la deuxième promotion américaine derrière la WWE, à travers le développement de nombreux partenariats, dont le plus important avec la New Japan Pro Wrestling, une visibilité plus importante grâce aux réseaux du Sinclair Broadcasting Group, et le lancement de leur propre plateforme de streaming appelée Honor Club en 2018.

En 2019, la ROH et la NJPW ont tenu un show en collaboration depuis le légendaire Madison Square Garden: G1 Supercard. Cet événement est devenu le show ayant engrangé le plus de bénéfices et ayant vendu le plus de tickets dans l'histoire de la Ring of Honor.

Néanmoins, avec le lancement de la All Elite Wrestling, gérée par d'anciens membres du roster de la ROH, et ayant mené à un exode plus ou moins important, la compagnie se retrouve affaiblie. Sinclair Broadcasting Group décide alors de relancer la ROH et leur première décision est de destituer Hunter Johnson de son poste de Head Booker, sans néanmoins donner le nom de son remplaçant. Après avoir créé l'excellence, la Ring of Honor souhaite désormais représenter l'excellence.
